Streetwise
Streetwise, formally known as the Maccabi GB Street Project is now in partnership with the CST is a unique piece of Youth work that Maccabi GB pioneered several years ago.
There is no doubt that Streetwise is one of the most innovative youth work programmes currently delivered in the Jewish community, and has been recognised by winning the Chief Rabbis Award and a string of praises from various agencies including OFSTED
What is the Streetwise?
This is a joint project between Maccabi GB and the Community Security Trust, working with young people to provide support and education across the religious, political and social spectrum of the Jewish community.
Why is it called Streetwise?
Originally, youth workers went onto the streets of Golders Green, Hampstead and Edgware to engage with the young people hanging out. Over the years, there has been a shift in the social pattern of young people, seeing them spend far less time on the streets. This has compelled the Project to shift its work away from the streets, and to identify catchments areas where they can interact with young people, such as Jewish communal institutions.
What is the aim of Streetwise?
To reach out to young Jewish people and offer them both personal support and informal education
To assist the safe development of young people, physically, mentally and emotionally.
To engage young people in conversation, and through informal education methods, provide learning opportunities which enable them to make informed decisions about their lives.
What does Streetwise do?
Street Awareness courses run over five weeks, these courses provide Krav Maga (self defence training) and workshops on issues including self esteem, relationships, alcohol, sexual health, Israel and anti-Semitism
Schools work making informal contact with young people in secondary schools through issue based workshops, and providing informal counselling, support and information. We also work with pupils in Year 6 to assist in the secondary school transfer process.
Advice & Information - we have a wide range of resources for both young people and professionals on issues which affect young Jewish people.
What role can Streetwise play at schools?
Workshops issue based workshops, which are mobile and creative in order to make contact with as many pupils as possible. These raise awareness of, and provide information about issues such as stress, self esteem, smoking, bullying, alcohol and relationships.
Listening Post the provision of informal counselling to support young people by listening and sign posting on to relevant staff or agencies.
Notice Board info and advice on workshop topics, general advice on coping with school life, details of appointment / referral system / where workers will be and when.
